The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a 250km-long, 4km-wide buffer zone dividing North and South Korea — one of the most heavily guarded borders on Earth, and one of the most visited attractions in South Korea. Standing just meters from North Korea, walking through infiltration tunnels, and peering into the hermit kingdom through binoculars is an experience unlike anything else on the planet.
Key Sites You'll Visit
- Panmunjeom / JSA (Joint Security Area) — The famous blue UN conference buildings straddling the border. You can literally step into North Korea inside the meeting rooms. Requires separate advance booking.
- 3rd Infiltration Tunnel — One of four tunnels dug by North Korea toward Seoul. Walk 265 meters underground. Helmets provided (mandatory).
- Dora Observatory — Southernmost observation point. See Kaesong Industrial Complex, Kijong-dong "Propaganda Village" and North Korean countryside through binoculars.
- Dorasan Station — A train station built in hope of reunification. Eerily empty but deeply moving.
- Imjingak Park — Freedom Bridge, memorial to divided families, tanks from the Korean War.

The DMZ is an active military zone — independent visits are not permitted. You must join an organized tour. Tours depart from central Seoul (usually Hongik University Station or major hotels) and include transportation, guide, and entry fees.

Getting There
