Get Up to 10% Back on Your Shopping
South Korea charges a 10% VAT (Value Added Tax) on most goods. As a foreign tourist, you're legally entitled to claim this back on qualifying purchases. In Myeongdong, Gangnam, or COEX, a serious shopping trip could yield a refund of β©50,000ββ©300,000 or more. It's free money β don't leave it behind.
Who Qualifies?
- Non-Korean residents visiting on a tourist visa
- Foreign residents who have been in Korea less than 6 months
- You must take the purchased goods out of Korea unused and unopened (cosmetics: sealed packaging)
Minimum Purchase Amount
Minimum spend at a single store: β©30,000 (approximately $22 USD). No maximum. The more you spend, the bigger the refund.
Method 1: Immediate Refund (Best)
Many stores in Myeongdong, Dongdaemun, and Insadong offer μ¦μνκΈ (immediate refund). You get your tax money back right at the store counter β no airport process needed.
- Look for the "μ¦μνκΈ" or "Tax Free" sticker at the store entrance
- Show your passport at checkout
- Receive the refund in cash or as a discount on your bill
The refund is slightly less than the full 10% (around 7β8%) due to a small service fee.
Method 2: Airport Refund at Incheon
If you shopped at stores without immediate refund, claim at Incheon Airport:
- Before check-in: Go to Customs Stamp Desk. If refund amount exceeds β©75,000, you must show the goods for inspection.
- After security (departure gates): Find Global Blue, KTIS, or Easy Tax Refund counters
- Present your passport, receipts, and stamped refund vouchers
- Choose cash (KRW, USD, EUR) or credit card refund
Method 3: Digital Refund (KTP App)
Korea has a growing digital refund system. Some stores are connected to the KTP (Korea Tax-free Platform) β your refund is credited to your credit card automatically within 2β4 weeks. No paper vouchers needed. Ask stores if they support "μ μνκΈ (electronic refund)".
Best Shopping Areas for Tax Refunds
- Myeongdong β Almost universal participation. Immediate refund available everywhere.
- COEX Mall (Gangnam) β Electronics, luxury, department stores
- Dongdaemun Design Plaza β Fashion, sportswear, streetwear
- Insadong β Traditional crafts and souvenirs

Important Rules
- Don't open or use items before leaving Korea (especially cosmetics)
- Keep all receipts and tax refund vouchers organized
- Refund vouchers expire β usually 3 months from purchase date
- Minimum refund for airport processing: β©30,000 per store, but you can combine across multiple stores
